What are we working on...
(Since 2025, all research projects and research contracts carried out by our team are formally integrated within the MITCOM Research Group)
Drawing from data of a representative national survey of the Spanish population (N=1770), our research addresses citizens´ attitudes and perceptions towards TVE, the national Spanish broadcaster. We are mainly focused on expectations vs. evaluation discrepancies and the explanatory power of consumption and political attitudes in citizens´ perceptions of TVE´s performance and the need for PSM. This project is partially funded by the National Program of I+D+i oriented to the Challenges of Society and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) about “Public Service Media in the Internet Society: New values, Governance, and Financing. Project ID: Defensa Proactiva frente a la Ciberamenaza Desinformativa: Antecedentes, Consecuencias y Mecanismos de Detección y Predicción de Contenido Falso (DEPROFAKE-CM-UC3M) awarded by COMUNIDAD DE MADRID
This project examines the role of public audiovisual media within a platform-dominated media ecosystem, with a particular focus on management models, multiplatform strategies, and the evaluation of public value in the Spanish context. Led by the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, the project adopts a comparative and multidisciplinary approach to analyze how public service media are adapting their governance structures, organizational practices, and accountability mechanisms in order to preserve their legitimacy, social relevance, and democratic function in increasingly competitive digital environments.
The research integrates quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including institutional analysis, public policy research, empirical studies on media production and consumption, and normative assessments of public value. Within this framework, the Metrics and Media Lab is responsible for conducting a representative survey in Spain and Germany, aimed at examining citizens’ perceptions, expectations, and evaluations of public service media across different media systems. By combining cross-national survey evidence with institutional and normative analyses, the project seeks to develop reference models for public audiovisual media in Spain, while situating the findings within a broader European context.
This project investigates how young people develop political attitudes, values, and democratic orientations in a media environment characterized by fragmentation, polarization, and the growing influence of social media. The project focuses on the role of journalism and digital platforms in shaping youth political socialization during periods of social and political contention, examining how news exposure, media trust, and online interactions contribute to democratic engagement, political learning, and civic norms.
Led by Homero Gil de Zúñiga, the project adopts a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, combining survey research and advanced quantitative analyses to capture cross-national differences and common patterns in youth political socialization. As part of the research design, members of the Metrics and Media Lab will contribute to the implementation of representative surveys in three different countries, providing comparative evidence on how media systems and political contexts condition young citizens’ democratic experiences.
